It originates from the Middle East, where it is traditionally eaten to enjoy the psychoactive effects of cannabis without smoking it. You can think of it as one of the first cannabis edibles!

While hashish will provide a potent high, you could try the recipe with CBD oils instead for a non-psychoactive experience.

The ‘Club des Hashischins’

In the late 19th century, a group of French artists and intellectuals known as the Club des Hashischins met regularly to experience the hallucinogenic effects of hashish. The group included novelist Charles Baudelaire, poet Paul Verlaine, and painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

The Club des Hashischins started in 1844 by French doctor Jacques-Joseph Moreau. Moreau studied the medical uses of cannabis and wanted to research its effects on the human mind. He recruited a group of like-minded individuals, including Baudelaire, Verlaine, and Toulouse-Lautrec, to help him explore the drug’s potential.

The club members would meet regularly to smoke hashish and share their experiences. They kept detailed journals of their trips, which provided unique insights into the workings of the human mind under the influence of cannabis. The club disbanded after a few years, but its legacy continues.
